Disaster Inc by Caimh McDonnell – Reviewed by Guy Portman
Bunny McGarry is an Irishman in America on a mission to find someone. Hungover one morning, he is having breakfast at a diner, when armed masked men burst in. The faux robbers are really looking for a female customer by the name of Amy Daniels. Bunny agrees to help her. And with that decision his plans are derailed. Matters quickly escalate.
The ensuing story incorporates a shady investment company, a ‘terrorist’ attack, ex-employees of the US government, a sadistic, buxom Latina and a somewhat deranged dwarf.
Disaster Inc is the first instalment in a series by former Irish stand-up comedian and successful television writer Caimh McDonnell. Comedy abounds in this frantically paced crime caper. Its humour, dialogue-heavy content, short chapters and large font size make for an effective and appealing combination. The plot is excessively convoluted however, and its over-abundance of characters resulted in this reader struggling to remember all their names. Despite these criticisms, he will definitely be reading more of the comic turned author’s work.
