The Kid Who Shot The Archduke by Henry Hinder – Reviewed by Guy Portman
Gavrily Princip is a nationalistic Bosnian teenager with a penchant for illegal revolutionary literature. When he hears about The Archduke’s forthcoming visit to Sarajevo, he sees a way to put his ideas into action, and in the process free his country from the yoke that is the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Our meagre yet determined protagonist persuades his friends to join the plot. We all know what happens next.
This atmospheric novelette blends fiction with non-fiction. It is replete with humour and incisive dialogue. However, in this reader’s opinion the plot is insufficient to make up for the lack of suspense.
